AI SEO for ecommerce brands on Shopify and BigCommerce
AI SEO for ecommerce is the work of getting a store’s products named when a shopper asks Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini what to buy. It rests on three things: product pages a crawler can read, complete product data in the feeds each engine uses, and ordinary ecommerce SEO on categories and collections.

How products reach AI answers
Each AI engine gets product information from a different place. A store controls some of those places directly and others only through its platform.
| Engine | Where it gets product data | What the store controls |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Pages in Google’s index, plus Merchant Center. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and that there are no additional technical requirements. | Indexable product and category pages, structured data that matches the visible text, and Merchant Center information kept up to date. |
| ChatGPT, for a Shopify store | Shopify’s catalog. OpenAI says Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already connected, and Shopify says selling in ChatGPT is active by default for eligible stores. | Product titles and descriptions, the store policies Shopify requires, and whether OpenAI’s search crawler is allowed. |
| ChatGPT, for BigCommerce and other platforms | A product feed the merchant submits. OpenAI says other merchants apply, integrate a feed that meets its specification, and join a waitlist. | Applying, building the feed, and keeping it accurate. |

Shopify and BigCommerce start from different places
A Shopify store is already in ChatGPT’s product results if it is eligible. A BigCommerce store has to apply and submit a feed. The SEO work on the two platforms differs for the same reason.
Shopify
Shopify says a store is eligible when it sells to US customers, its products qualify for Shopify Catalog, and its terms, privacy and refund policies are set. Products sold only to other businesses are not supported.
The work is product data quality, collection pages and crawl health, not setup.
BigCommerce
BigCommerce has no built-in connection named on OpenAI’s merchant page, so the route is an application and a product feed. Google’s side is the same on both platforms: indexable pages and Merchant Center.
DIAP Media has written at length on the platform’s strengths and limits for search.
What the work covers
AI SEO for a store is four kinds of work, done in this order.
Product data
Titles, descriptions, identifiers, price and availability, stated the same way on the page, in structured data and in the feed. AI engines match products to questions from this data.
Category and collection pages
The pages that answer a shopper’s category question: what the range is, who it is for and how the options differ, in passages an engine can quote.
Technical access
Product pages that render without heavy scripts, filtered navigation that does not flood the index, and crawler rules that let search crawlers in.
Proof outside the store
Reviews, comparisons and mentions on the sites each engine already cites for the category, tracked monthly next to the store’s own citations.
What a store does not need
A store does not need special AI files, special markup or a paid “ChatGPT setup” to appear in AI answers. Google says no new machine-readable files or special schema are required for its AI features.
An eligible Shopify store is already connected to ChatGPT, so anyone charging to connect it is charging for nothing. What moves results is plainer: accurate product data, pages a crawler can read, and category pages worth quoting. A store with a small catalog and thin product pages should fix those first, and the free audit will say so.
What ecommerce SEO costs
Ecommerce SEO plans cost $1,700, $2,800 or $5,000 per month, set by the number of collection or category pages worked on. The Dedicated GEO Program covers ecommerce AI search with citation tracking and costs $3,000 to $10,000+ per month.

Ecommerce AI search questions
What is AI SEO for ecommerce?
AI SEO for ecommerce is the work of getting a store’s products named in AI answers from Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. It combines crawlable product pages, complete product data in the feeds each engine reads, and standard ecommerce SEO on category and collection pages.
What does GEO stand for in ecommerce?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. In ecommerce it means making product and category information easy for AI engines to read, trust and quote, so the store is named when a shopper asks what to buy.
Can you buy things through ChatGPT?
As of October 2026, shoppers in the United States can browse products in ChatGPT and complete the purchase on the merchant’s own site. OpenAI says it is moving away from a stand-alone checkout inside ChatGPT.
Does a Shopify store need to do anything to appear in ChatGPT?
Usually not. Shopify says selling in ChatGPT is active by default for eligible stores: those that sell to US customers, have products that qualify for Shopify Catalog, and have their store policies set. Better product data improves how often the products are shown.
How much does ecommerce SEO cost?
At DIAP Media, ecommerce SEO costs $1,700 per month for up to 10 collection or category pages, $2,800 for up to 25, and $5,000 for unlimited pages. The Dedicated GEO Program for AI search costs $3,000 to $10,000+ per month. Prices are as of October 2026.
Is SEO still worth it now that AI answers shopping questions?
Yes. Google states that a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search before it can be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and it points merchants to Merchant Center. The pages and feeds that SEO maintains are the same ones AI engines read.
