What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Updated October 14, 2026

Short answer: generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making a business’s pages and reputation easy for AI search tools to find, trust and quote. The goal is a citation or a mention inside an AI-written answer in Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Gemini or Claude, not only a blue link on a results page.

What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engine optimization is the practice of shaping content, site access and brand signals so that AI answer engines select a page as a source. The term comes from a research paper, “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization”, submitted to arXiv on 16 November 2023 by Pranjal Aggarwal and colleagues.

That paper reported that some content changes raised a source’s visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40% in its test setup. Treat that as a lab result, not a forecast for any one website. The useful idea is simpler: AI engines pick sources, and a page can be written and maintained so it is easier to pick.

DIAP Media, a Scottsdale company formed in 2006, treats GEO as its lead service. The details of that work are on the generative engine optimization service page.

How is GEO different from SEO?

GEO is built on top of SEO, not instead of it. Traditional SEO aims for a ranking position and a click. GEO aims for a page to be read, trusted and quoted inside a generated answer, which often appears above or instead of the classic list of links.

Question Traditional SEO Generative engine optimization
What counts as a win A ranking position and a click A citation, link or brand mention inside an AI answer
Unit that competes A whole page for a query A passage that answers one sub-question cleanly
Who reads it first Googlebot and Bingbot Googlebot plus AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot
Main signals Relevance, links, page experience The same, plus clear standalone answers, named facts and a consistent brand entity
How it is measured Rankings, clicks, impressions Citations across engines, brand mentions, Search Console totals, referral visits

Which AI engines does GEO cover?

GEO covers every tool that writes an answer and links to sources. In practice that means five groups, and each one finds pages in a slightly different way.

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Both draw on Google’s own index. Google says both may use a technique it calls query fan-out, running several related searches across subtopics before writing a response.
  • ChatGPT Search. OpenAI says its crawler, OAI-SearchBot, is what surfaces websites in ChatGPT’s search features, and its help center says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers.
  • Perplexity. Perplexity runs its own crawler, PerplexityBot, to surface and link websites in its results.
  • Gemini. Google’s assistant app, separate from Search.
  • Claude. Anthropic’s assistant, which can search the web and cite pages.

OpenAI’s crawler documentation states that sites which opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. Blocking that one bot in robots.txt or at a CDN quietly removes a site from ChatGPT’s answers.

What actually gets a page cited?

A page gets cited when an engine can reach it, understand it quickly and trust it enough to quote. For Google, the bar is plain: Google’s AI features documentation says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Beyond eligibility, these are the habits DIAP Media builds into pages for AI search:

  1. Answer first. Put a direct, 40 to 60 word answer under each question heading, so a passage still makes sense when it is lifted out alone.
  2. Write each section for one sub-question. Query fan-out breaks a search into smaller questions; a page that answers several of them cleanly has more chances to be picked.
  3. Use specific, checkable facts. Prices, dates, named tools and named places are easier to quote than general claims. DIAP Media publishes its own prices for this reason.
  4. Keep the business entity consistent. The same name, address, phone and description on the website, Google Business Profile and major directories help engines connect mentions to one business.
  5. Let the crawlers in. Allow Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt and at the CDN, then confirm it with a server log or a test fetch.
  6. Earn mentions elsewhere. Reviews, directory profiles and coverage on other sites give engines independent confirmation of what a business does.

What does not matter, according to Google?

Several popular GEO tactics have no effect on Google Search. Google states that there is no special schema.org markup to add for AI features, and that no new machine-readable files or AI text files are needed to appear in them.

Google’s AI optimization guide, last updated on 10 July 2026, says Google Search ignores llms.txt files, so adding one neither helps nor hurts a site in Google. Other engines may read such files, but no major engine has documented llms.txt as a ranking or citation signal.

The Google-Extended robots.txt token is another common mix-up. It controls whether content may be used for training and grounding in Gemini models and other Google systems; Google says it does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search.

Structured data still has a job: describing the business, products and authors accurately. It is not a shortcut into an AI answer.

How do you measure GEO?

GEO is harder to measure than rankings, and that limitation is worth stating plainly: no engine publishes a full citation report for a site, so every measurement is partial.

A workable measurement stack looks like this. Google counts AI Mode and AI Overviews traffic inside the Web search type of the Search Console Performance report; AI Mode data has counted toward those totals since June 2025, but it is not broken out separately. Referral visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com show up in analytics tools such as GA4. Citation tracking tools and a fixed list of prompts, checked monthly across engines, fill in the rest.

DIAP Media expects AI search work to show results in 2 to 4 months. Live-retrieval engines such as Perplexity and ChatGPT Search can cite new content within weeks. These are expectations, not promises.

What does GEO cost?

DIAP Media’s Local SEO plan costs $800 a month for one Google Business Profile and its core service area, and AI search work is included at that level. Dedicated AI search programs, covering national and ecommerce GEO with monthly citation reporting, run $3,000 to $10,000+ a month. All prices are on the DIAP Media pricing page, and local and national plans are month-to-month.

Ecommerce stores have their own AI search questions, including product feeds for ChatGPT shopping; those are covered on the ecommerce SEO page. Arizona businesses can see the state-level approach on the Arizona AI SEO page.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO the same as AEO or AI SEO?

Mostly, yes. Answer engine optimization (AEO), AI SEO and LLM SEO all describe getting cited in AI-written answers. The labels differ by who coined them; the underlying work is the same.

Does a site need llms.txt or special schema for AI Overviews?

No. Google says no special schema and no AI text files are required, and that Google Search ignores llms.txt. Indexing and snippet eligibility are the requirements.

Can a business be cited without ranking on page one?

It can happen. Query fan-out pulls sources for sub-questions, so a page that answers one narrow question well can be cited for a broader search where it does not rank highly.
