Local SEO and AI SEO: what each one does, and where they meet
Local SEO earns a place on Google’s map. AI SEO earns a mention inside an AI answer. They draw on much of the same material, which is why DIAP Media sells them as one plan: $800 per month for one location, with AI SEO included.

Local SEO and AI SEO side by side
The two answer different searches and are measured in different ways. Most local businesses need both.
| Local SEO | AI SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| What it earns | A place in Google’s map pack and the local results under it. | A mention or a link inside an answer from Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini. |
| The search it answers | A service and a place: a roofer nearby, pest control in one town. | A question: what it costs, who is best, which option to choose. |
| What it is built from | A Google Business Profile, reviews, a page for each location and accurate listings. | Pages that answer one question each, the same business facts everywhere, and mentions on sites the engines already read. |
| How it is measured | Map position for each location, calls and direction requests. | Whether the business is cited across many runs of the same questions, and by which engine. |
| How long it takes | First movement in 60 to 90 days. Meaningful results in 3 to 6 months. | Usually 2 to 4 months. Engines that search the live web can cite a new page within weeks. |
| Price at DIAP Media | $800/mo for one location. | Included in that price. A dedicated program costs $3,000 to $10,000+/mo. |
Where the two meet
On 11 October 2026 DIAP Media ran seven customer searches for local trades in Phoenix, from air conditioning to fencing. All seven showed a map pack. None showed an AI Overview. Local SEO still decides who gets the call, and AI SEO decides who is named in the questions around it.
Google’s AI is built on Google Search
Google says its generative AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems, and that a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet before it can support an AI answer. The local page that ranks is the page that can be cited.
AI answers read business profiles
On the same day, an AI Overview for a “who should I hire” search drew 20 of its 28 source pages from Google business listings. See the record.
ChatGPT sends its own crawler
OpenAI says a site that opts out of its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Local SEO never checks this. AI SEO does.
Nothing special to install
Google says no new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema are needed to appear in its AI features, and that Google Search does not use llms.txt files.

What Google showed for the question itself
People now ask Google how the two differ, and Google answers with an AI Overview.
| Search | AI Overview shown | What the page drew on |
|---|---|---|
| “local seo vs ai seo” | Yes, with 16 sources. Checked at 19:49 UTC. | YouTube, agency sites, software vendors and Quora. |
| “local seo vs ai seo” | Yes, with 11 sources, on a second look. Checked at 19:51 UTC. | YouTube, software vendors, a trade publication, Reddit and agency sites. The answer included a four-row comparison table. |
| “does local seo help with chatgpt” | Yes, with 4 sources. Checked at 19:49 UTC. | YouTube, Facebook, one agency site and Quora. |
One limit to know: AI Overviews appear and disappear from one check to the next, and their sources change each time. Being cited is measured over many runs of the same questions, and nobody can guarantee it. How DIAP Media measures AI search

Local SEO and AI SEO questions
What is the difference between local SEO and AI SEO?
Local SEO earns a place in Google’s map pack and local results for searches that name a service and a place. AI SEO earns a mention inside answers from Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Both rely on accurate business facts, reviews and pages that answer real questions.
Does local SEO help a business show up in ChatGPT?
Partly. The reviews, listings and pages that local SEO builds are material AI engines read. ChatGPT also uses its own search crawler, and OpenAI says a site that blocks it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, so crawler access has to be checked as well.
What is SEO for AI called?
It is called AI SEO, Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) or LLM SEO. All four names describe getting a business cited inside AI answers.
Is local SEO still worth doing?
Yes. On 11 October 2026, all seven customer searches for local trades that DIAP Media checked in Phoenix showed a map pack and no AI Overview. The map is earned with local SEO.
How much does local SEO cost?
At DIAP Media and its sister brand Lifted Websites, local SEO costs $800 per month for one location, with AI SEO included. Multi-Local Plus costs $2,000 per month for up to three locations, and each additional location is $800 per month. Prices are as of October 2026.
Do I need a separate budget for AI SEO?
Not for one location. AI SEO is included in the $800 Local SEO plan. The Dedicated GEO Program, at $3,000 to $10,000+ per month, is for national and ecommerce brands that want citation tracking across every engine.
