Shopify AI SEO: how a store’s products reach ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Copilot
An eligible Shopify store is already connected to the main AI shopping channels, and Shopify says there is no fee for selling in ChatGPT. So the work is not setup. It is making one store’s products the ones an AI engine chooses to show. DIAP Media does that on ecommerce plans from $1,700 per month.

Which AI channels Shopify connects, and how
Shopify calls this feature agentic storefronts and says it is active by default for eligible stores. Product data reaches each channel through Shopify Catalog.
| Channel | Who is eligible | Where the purchase happens |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Stores that sell to customers in the United States. Active by default for eligible stores. | On the store’s own checkout, opened in ChatGPT’s in-app browser. Shopify says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT. |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Stores based in the United States that sell to US customers. | Checkout inside the chat is switched on by default for eligible stores. |
| Microsoft Copilot | Listed by Shopify with the channels that have built-in checkout. | Inside the chat, on the same default. |

What a store owner controls
Shopify handles the connection. Four things stay in the owner’s hands, and they decide how the products are described once they arrive.
Which channels are on
Agentic storefronts has had its own page in the Shopify admin since May 2026. A store can choose which AI channels it sells on and can remove ChatGPT’s access to its products.
Product data
Shopify says its Catalog is the primary way AI channels receive product data. Titles, descriptions, variants, identifiers, price and availability have to be complete and true there.
The store’s own answers
Shopify’s free Knowledge Base app lets a store view and edit the answers AI shopping agents give about it. Shopify says the app does not change how often a store appears.
Store policies
Shopify says terms of service, privacy and refund policies have to be set for a store to be eligible.
What Shopify does for SEO on its own, and what it leaves
Google’s AI answers are built from pages in Google’s index, so ordinary Shopify SEO still decides what Google can show. Shopify automates part of it.
| Done automatically | Canonical tags, a sitemap.xml file, a robots.txt file, title tags that include the store name, and SSL |
|---|---|
| Editing robots.txt | Only by adding a robots.txt.liquid template to the theme. Shopify calls this an unsupported customization and warns that a mistake can lose all traffic |
| Duplicate product URLs | A product reached through a collection has the same content on a second URL. Shopify’s automatic canonical tags are what keep the duplicate out of results |
| Product structured data | Shopify’s structured_data filter outputs a Product, or a ProductGroup when the product has variants. Whether a theme uses it has to be checked |
| Left to the store | Collection page copy, product descriptions, internal links and content that answers shoppers’ questions |

What Google showed for two Shopify searches
For Shopify questions, Google’s AI leaned on Shopify’s own pages.
| Search | AI Overview shown | What the page drew on |
|---|---|---|
| “shopify ai seo” | Yes, with 8 sources. Checked at 19:49 UTC. | YouTube, Reddit, Instagram, and Shopify’s own app store, academy and help centre. |
| “shopify ai seo” | Yes, with 9 sources, on a second look. Checked at 19:51 UTC. | Shopify’s own pages again, with YouTube, Instagram, a trade publication, a software vendor and two agency sites. |
| “how to get shopify products in chatgpt” | Yes, with 3 sources. Checked at 19:49 UTC. | YouTube, shopify.com and one agency site. |
What this shows: the answer to “how do I get my Shopify products into ChatGPT” is on Shopify’s own help pages, and for an eligible store it is mostly “they already are”. The work that is left is the work on this page. Sources change from one check to the next, and nobody can guarantee a citation. How DIAP Media measures AI search
What a Shopify store does not need to pay for
An eligible Shopify store does not need a paid “ChatGPT setup”. Shopify connects it by default, and Shopify and OpenAI both say there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT.
Google says its AI features need no new machine-readable files and no special schema. One honest limit: no agency controls which products an AI engine shows. Complete product data, readable pages and collection pages worth quoting raise the odds. They do not guarantee a place.
What Shopify SEO costs
Ecommerce SEO costs $1,700, $2,800 or $5,000 per month, set by the number of collection pages worked on. The Dedicated GEO Program adds citation tracking across AI engines.
| Cart Booster | Up to 10 collection or category pages. Shopify, BigCommerce and WooCommerce. | $1,700/mo |
|---|---|---|
| Storefront Success | Up to 25 collection or category pages. | $2,800/mo |
| Unlimited Uptake | Unlimited collection or category pages. | $5,000/mo |
| Dedicated GEO Program | Full citation-share tracking, national and ecommerce AI search work, and monthly prompt-probe reporting. | $3,000 to $10,000+/mo |
Shopify AI search questions
How do I get my Shopify products into ChatGPT?
For an eligible store, they are already there. Shopify says selling in ChatGPT is active by default for stores that sell to customers in the United States, with product data supplied through Shopify Catalog. A store can check or change this on the agentic storefronts page in its admin.
Does Shopify charge a fee for sales that start in ChatGPT?
Shopify’s help page says there are no fees associated with selling in ChatGPT, and OpenAI says there are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT. This is as of October 2026.
Can a Shopify store turn ChatGPT off?
Yes. Shopify says a store can manage which AI channels it sells on and can remove ChatGPT’s access to its products through Shopify Catalog.
Should I edit robots.txt on Shopify?
Rarely. Shopify generates the file automatically, and changing it means adding a robots.txt.liquid template, which Shopify calls an unsupported customization. A mistake there can remove the whole store from search.
How much does Shopify SEO cost?
At DIAP Media, ecommerce SEO costs $1,700 per month for up to 10 collection pages, $2,800 for up to 25 and $5,000 for unlimited pages. The same plans are sold by Lifted Websites, DIAP Media’s local SEO brand. Prices are as of October 2026.
Does the Shopify Knowledge Base app improve AI visibility?
Not directly. Shopify says the app lets a store view and customize the answers AI shopping agents give about it, and that it does not affect how often the store appears in AI platform results.
