What role does being in DMOZ play in rankings?

Here is a video of Matt Cutts answering a question about a competitor having a DMOZ link that ranks higher in the search engines then a website that does not have a link in DMOZ.

DMOZ is one of the oldest website directories that you can submit a website to get listed in a relevant category. Since the domain age of DMOZ is really old and its a well trusted link it is one many websites want when starting out with using SEO to help rank their websites.

Matt Cutts was asked about showing recent posts from your blog on the home page of your website. This is common with most WordPress blogs as they have a widget for recent posts that are often used in the sidebar or footers of the home page of a website just like on our website.

It’s not an issue but he does give a tip about using just an excerpt and then link to the main full blog post as a best practice. Check it out here from Google Webmaster Help YouTube Channel.

Search Engine Land and Matt Cutts of Google’s web spam team came up with a creative video to wish the search engine marketing industry a Merry Christmas. We thought they did a better job then we could ever do. So instead of recreating the wheel we figured we post their video here for our internet marketing blog readers.

Under the video is a list of what the Googlebot gave to them in case you don’t catch in the video the first time.

On the 12th day of Googlemas my Googlebot gave to me…

12 optimized titles,
11 local listings,
10 Sitemaps submitted,
9 bloggers linking,
8 sitelinks showing,
7 Google trends,
6 social signals,
5 followed links,
4 404s fixed,
3 301s,
2 indented listings,
and a first place organic ranking.

Matt Cutts, with Google has been kind enough to blog about what Google looks for when it comes to returning the best search results. In a previous post I had the most recent WordCamp 2009 video. However, he just sent out a tweet today on his Twitter about a video presentation from Wordcamp 2007.
