Hat Tip: Brafton

I recently read an article about how 1-800-Mattress didn’t embrace search engine optimization and wouldn’t allow franchisees have control and create their own search engine friendly site since the corporate site was so terrible.

Here is a few quotes and takeaways from the article;

In an interview with Econsultancy, Evan Saks, regional head of advertising for the mattress chain, says it was difficult to do anything with the site because the parent company had complete control over the domain. Calling it a “terrible, terrible site,” Saks says the company stopped all online marketing, including stopping their search engine optimization (SEO) campaign.

Because the franchisees weren’t allowed to set up their own site, Saks says a landing page was created at 1-800-mattress.net and with the help of search engine optimization (SEO), Saks says the site saw almost double the business the main page was getting.

It was little too late though. Since they didn’t embrace how people are searching and shopping online they filed bankruptcy and were sold to a competitor.

If you don’t embrace internet strategies and start using search engine optimization, social media, and managing your online reputation you are going to be left behind to your competitors that do.
